The CSHET Spotlight is an opportunity for YOU to shine. You wear so many different hats each day in and outside of work. You make positive and long-lasting contributions that may go unrecognized. And that’s ok! The work you do is selfless and not for personal glory. However, when the opportunity presents itself for you to shine…you should take it. The CSHET Spotlight highlights a CSHET member each quarter in the C-Mail and/or newsletter and also on the CSHET website. It’s a great way for CSHET members to get to know one another and it’s a great networking tool.
Marianna Smith, MInEd, BA, RN, BC, Hospital Computer Educator for Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (Spartanburg, S.C was selected to be featured in the CSHET Spotlight. Marianna was honored to be featured.
Sherry: If you had to put it in words, tell us what your primary role(s) are in your current
position.
Marianna: Train new employees on the functionality of computerized
documentation and order entry
Sherry: What skill do you feel is your biggest asset in performing your job?
Marianna: The ability to see the whole picture then breakdown the
training/education into components so the new employee
understand the application and can apply the functionality to their
specific work venue (terminal, and enabling objectives in
conjunction with the adult learning principles).
Sherry: What have been some highlights of your career?
Marianna: Director of Education at another facility. I am proud of the
opportunity from the beginning to teach/train the electronic
medical record at this facility as I did not seek out this position but
it was assigned to me. How very fortunate I am to have been
involved at the very beginning and have an in depth
understanding of where we began and where we are at present, I
truly love my job and appreciate the leadership of my director!!
Sherry: What advice could you offer to a new healthcare educator?
Marianna: 1st – Understand the Education Process
2nd – Study/learn so that you have a very in depth knowledge of
what you are teaching or training – be sure you know the
difference between teaching and training. You need to be
more knowledgeable than the people you are
teaching/training (know your audience).
3rd - PREPARE!!! PREPARE!!! PREPARE!!
Sherry: What is a “Fun Fact” about you?
Marianna: My husband and I were members of the Carolina Shag Team who
won the Naional Team competition in 1996. We now show
Dachshunds and have many champions and awards.
Sherry: WOW…what an accomplishment. Shaging is something I always wanted to
learn. Do you still dance?
Marianna: Just for fun! Now we show the Dachshunds.
Sherry: How many Dachshunds do you have and where do you show?
Marianna: We have 6 and we have shown in Greenville, Spartanburg, Atlanta
and as far as Texas.
Sherry: What did you want to be when you were 12?
Marianna: A nurse
Sherry: I noticed one of your credenitials is MInED. What is your degree?
Marianna: It is a Masters in Industrial Education. The focus is on education
theory and process.
Sherry: During your childhood who was your favorite comic character?
Marianna: Popeye the Sailor
Sherry: If you could have a superpower what would it be?
Marianna: No parent should bury their child; therefore I would return all
deceased children to their parents.
Sherry: Do you install toilet paper so that you pull from the top or the bottom of the
roll?
Marianna: Top of the roll
Sherry: If you could go on an all expense trip and take 1 guest, where would you go
and who would you take?
Marianna: Australia and would take my husband
Sherry: Why Australia?
Marianna: My daughter always wanted to go to Australia and we would like
to fulfill that dream for her.
Sherry: Marianna Thanks for sharing yourself with us. You sound like a pretty fun girl
who loves her profession, and enjoys life to the fullest.
Well folks until the next edition of CSHET Spotlight this is Sherry (quoting Cynthia Rice) saying “SHINE baby SHINE”!
